The Buffalo Grove community is mourning the sudden and heartbreaking loss of Lauren Delahanty, a respected educator and school leader who tragically died in a scuba diving accident. She was a beloved member of the faculty at Prairie Elementary School and served as a principal in Kildeer Countryside CCSD 96.
According to sources close to the family, Lauren passed away during a diving excursion, though further details about the incident have not yet been released.
Lauren was not only an experienced school administrator but also a deeply committed educator. She most recently served as Principal at Kildeer Countryside CCSD 96, a role she took on in August 2023, following nearly two years as Assistant Principal. Her passion for education and student success was evident in every position she held.
Prior to her leadership roles, she worked for nearly a decade as a School Psychologist at Zion-Benton Township High School District 126 and also helped students with learning strategies as a Senior Executive Functioning Coach with Beyond BookSmart. Colleagues and parents alike remember her as a warm, intelligent, and deeply compassionate leader who advocated tirelessly for children.
Lauren held a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and earned an Education Specialist (EdS) degree in School Psychology from UMass Boston, credentials that reflected her lifelong commitment to both mental health and education.
Her sudden death has shaken the district and left colleagues, students, and parents grieving. In a brief statement, a representative from District 96 said:
“Lauren Delahanty was more than a school leader—she was a mentor, a supporter, and a source of joy for so many children and staff. Her presence will be deeply missed, and her impact will never be forgotten.”
